Our organic farm is fully operational and stands
as a valuable educational resource for the community. |
Around the building are special plantings of prairie and woodland wildflowers. We also have a butterfly/hummingbird garden. The Gift and Book Store at the Center has the wider supply of books and bird related merchandise of our two stores.
The Farm (9101 Frederick Pike) is the site of many special events. Cows, pigs, horses, chickens, turkeys, sheep, goats and barn swallows can all be found here if you come at the right time. The sugar bush, organic garden, herb garden and access to the trails are here. The shop at the farm is filled with special agriculture related gifts. |
Some of our favorite programs for families, individuals and the general public are described below:
Winter Adventures takes place on the four Saturdays of February at the Center and the Farm. Children take part in activities that enhance understanding and appreciation of wildlife in winter.
Summer Adventures programs are week long half day programs focused on exploring the Earth. A stream study is just about a requirement for Summer Adventures. The Farm and Center are both part of Summer Adventures.
The Center for Lifelong Learning has classes for all ages (babies, pre-school, and adults) and interests. Check back for more information.
Public Walks take place almost every Saturday and Sunday at 2:30. Call the Center to find out what's happening this week! You could be guided through the prairie, search for spring wildflowers, watch sap being boiled into maple syrup, or become involved in any of a dozen other things.
The Pancake Meal takes place in March. Eat some hot pancakes with freshly made maple syrup then take a walk in the winter woods to see the buckets hanging from the trees.
Sugar Bush Walks take place in February when the sap just begins to run. Visitors see the big, old maples hung with buckets and the sugar house under a column of steam. Be sure to get a taste of fresh grade A syrup.
Candle Dipping takes place in late fall. Our ancestors slaughtered farm animals in fall and made soap and candles from the fats. Beeswax stored from the summers harvest of wax was used for the best candles. Make a candle with us.
Natural History Trips take you to wonderful landscapes in the company of Aullwood naturalists. we have toured Guatemala, the Everglades, Northern Ontario, and other sites. Upcoming trips are filling now!
Full Moon Walks take place on velvet summer evenings or exquisitely crystal winter nights. We hold at least 12 each year.
Butterfly Census takes place at the end of June. Neophytes and experts enjoy a day of butterfly study.
Incredible Insect Day gives everyone a chance to celebrate the 6 legged race with honey-rich baked good, dragonfly chasing, lightning bug viewing.
The Flights of Fancy Festival comes with unusual and colorful birds, big and small bats of the world, stunt and fighter kites, boomerangs (make your own!), radio-controlled aircraft, a full-sized replica o the 1902 Wright glider, children's activities, special foods and much more. Look for it in April at the Marie S. Aull Education Center!
Apple Fest means apple butter, apple pies, apple cider, and apples to eat right out of your hand. Johnny Appleseed shares the joy of apples, people take wagon rides, artists and craftspeople share their wares and a wonderful time is had by all. This happens on the last weekend in September. This takes place at the Farm.
The Nature Quilt Show takes place at the Center in spring. Entries center on a natural history theme. The 1998 theme is "All Creatures Great and Small". It takes place at the Center.
The Amish Quilt Auction and Amish Quilt Show take place in September and October. The show is at the Center, the auction is at the Farm.
Happy Bird Day is a chance to take a bird walk, find out more about feeding the birds or hear a talk about a special bird topic. HBD takes place at the Center. |
